Veterinarians are not taught very much about dentistry in most veterinary colleges. Times are changing, and some colleges are adding introductory dentistry to the curriculum, but most of these are still elective classes. Considering that periodontal (gum) disease is the most common infectious disease in dogs and cats, we should be focusing more on the prevention and treatment of such an important and widespread disease.
